The 122nd Tournament of Roses Parade

This year the city of Pasadena brings to us across the world the 122nd Tournament of Roses Parade. Thanks to Kiwanis International, I was able to ride their float "Childrens' Dreams". It was only appropriate that this be the title of the float, as my platform for the year is "Empowering Children & Young Adults with Disabilities to Make Their Dreams Into Reality". What a great way for Ms. Wheelchair California to start of the year.

The entire Rose Parade Experience was truly one I'll never forget - especially since I was able to share making these memories with my sister Heather, who also got to ride the float with me.

Our first day at Rosemont, where they build a few of the floats, was ever bit of exciting, beautiful & jaw dropping. As far back as I can remember, watching the Rose Parade on T.V. was & still is a must in my family. Seeing how each float was created was a lifetime experience & even more-so when Heather & I got to Help out.

While in Pasadena, I had the opportunity to meet the 2011 Rose Queen - Evanne, and her Royal Court. There were all very sweet. Funny how all o our outfits matched!The day of the parade was so sunny - perfect, considering all of the rain we've been getting the lat few weeks. The stands & streets were filled with so many people including TCU fans & my personal favorite - Wisconsin Badger fans. It truly was a great way to start off 2011.

I'd like to thank Kiwanis - especially Shirley & Bart Carrol, Larry Madick, and Papa Dave Wallach, for hosting Ms. Wheelchair California. Thank you so much for believing in MWCC & helping society become more aware of the disability community. I cannot express how much I love Kiwanis & the amazing people that belong to this great organization. Thank you to our driver for the week, David Juare. I really appreciate your time & your support in making my experience the best possible. A huge thanks to my sister, Heather, for being there for me through everything. I'm so thankful that we got to experience being in the parade together. i love you.

Hey everyone!!!

It's my turn!!! I get to be on the Kiwanis Float for the 2011 Rose Parade! What a great way to start off a New Year. Tomorrow will be my first day at Rosemont & I'm so excited!

The 122nd Rose Parade themed “Building Dreams, Friendships & Memories”, will take place on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. (PST) featuring spirited marching bands from throughout the nation, majestic floral floats, and high-stepping equestrian units.

Asian & Pacific Islanders with Disabilities Conference

Today I was asked to speak on the "Real Life Stories/Community Building" Panel at the APIDC Panel. I had the opportunity to answer questions about my life, as an Asian & Pacific Islander American with a disability, my profession, what growing up was like and how I contribute to my community. Also on the panel was Tim Jin, Sophorina Ko and Kevin - Dat Vu. Their stories were powerful & very enlightening.

While at the Conference, I was able to sit in on the "Social Media Panel". There I learned how and why social media is a powerful tool to a successful business from Doreen Wong (ARS), James Wright (NBC - Universal), Edwin Dutarte (Pink Slip Mixers) and Lotay Yang (Black Card Circle).

Art students from Long Beach City College were there auctioning off art work to benefit APIDC.

The National Ataxia Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of persons affected by ataxia through support, education, and research. NAF is a membership supported, nonprofit organization established in1957 to help persons with ataxia and their families. The Foundation's primary purpose is to support promising ataxia research and to provide vital programs and services for ataxia families.

In 1978 the Foundation first began direct funding of ataxia research through the NAF Research "Seed-Money" Program. Since that time, the Foundation has established additional research programs which have included programs such as the NAF Young Investigator Award, the NAF Fellowship Award, the NAF Friedreich's Ataxia Special Projects Award and other research initiatives.

NAF research programs continue to fund promising ataxia research studies throughout the world. The Foundation supports research in dominant ataxia (including SCAs), recessive ataxia (including Friedreich's) and sporadic ataxia.

The "International Ataxia Awareness Day" is an international effort from ataxia organizations around the world to dedicate September 25 as International Ataxia Awareness Day. Each participating country, state, or individual may have a specific plan for this event.

Today was the Ataxia Walk & Roll at the Pike in Long Beach. I was very happy to be able to shar a similar story of having a rare disability.

Through nurture and education, Precious Lamb Preschool is a tangible support bringing hope, restoration, stability and empowerment.

Precious Lamb Preschool, Inc. (PLP) is a non-profit organization committed to providing children and families suffering homelessness with free, Christ-centered education and care. PLP serves families in the Long Beach area who have experienced domestic violence, crisis pregnancy, substance abuse and homelessness. Families are residents of shelters or transitional programs. At no cost to the family, the young children benefit from a full day, developmentally appropriate preschool program while parents participate in their rehabilitation, job training or educational programs.

Today, I was blessed. My mom & I visited the little ones during play time & got to read them a story.

Miss Lailani, who is in charge of PLP, really has a gift for nurturing these children & motivating their mothers.

Today, I was asked to sing the National Anthem at the LBCC Viking Football Game! It was great to see everyone I used to see when I attended LBCC - old band teachers, fellow students. It was especially great to see my cousin, Levai Sua, #93, do what he does best on the field! I miss my days at Long Beach City College! The Greek Festival in Long Beach is again, kind enough to donate a table to MWCC to bring awareness of the disability community to those who are not. There were so many great people who came by to visit. MWCC had a 50/50 drawing to raise funds to Get me on the Kiwanis International Rose Float on New Years Day. I cannot tell you how good real Greek food is - the lamb, Spanakopita & Loukoumathes are amongst my favorite. Thank you Toula & the Greek Festival for supporting MWCC and asking us back again! Tonight Hooters in Long Beach hosted a fundraiser for Ms. Wheelchair California 2010 by donating 20% of all our guests bill. All proceeds help get Jennifer on the Kiwanis International Rose Float on New Years Day.

Jennifer wins 1st Runner Up at Ms. Wheelchair America 2011!

On August 14, 2010, I was awarded the awesome title of 1st Runner Up at the Ms. Wheelchair America 2011 Pageant held in Grand Rapids, MI. What an honor, and thank you to everyone - friends, coworkers, family, the former Ms. Wheelchair California 2009, Alyson Roth, the Ms. Wheelchair CA Board, Flexiciser, Kiwanis, the MWA judges - everyone, for encouraging me and helping me along the way! Along with this title, I was also awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award"! What a true honor!

The new Ms. Wheelchair America 2011 is Alexandra McArthur from North Carolina. So, Erika Bogan, Ms. Wheelchair America 2010 (also from North Carolina), got to pass on the title to her own state!

I look forward to working with the Ms. Wheelchair America Board and with Alexandra in the year to come in addition to the work I'm already doing as Ms. Wheelchair CA 2010!

Ms. Wheelchair America 2011 - Day 1

I made it here safely in Grand Rapids, MI and what a great state! My sister and I had some time to unpack and rest up for the week on Sunday, and today was the day we got to meet all of the contestants from 28 states around the nation. Let me just tell you there are so many great women!

Before I got to meet everyone, I had the fantastic opportunity to be on the local news in Grand Rapids alongside Ms. Wheelchair Michigan. Click here to see it.

Tonight, we had our Welcome Dinner and Introductions. I got to meet Ms. Wheelchair America 2010, Erika Bogan, as well as some other wonderful ladies. What an experience this has already been, so I can't wait to see how the rest of the week goes! Keep praying for strength and wisdom!

Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Convention Celebrates 5 Years

The AMCSI Support Group Inc. celebrated a very special occasion. And where else would better suite celebrating 5 years of success? None other than Walt Disney World's Grand Floridian Hotel.

For 5 years the AMCSI Support Group has been gathering at an annual convention, to celebrate & acknowledge those living with and caring for those with Arthrogryposis. As most of you know, I was born with it. AMC occurs 1 in every 3,000 births. The goal of AMSCI is to be used as a tool to provide information and a better understanding among anyone affected with AMC.

This year I was blessed enough with the opportunity to be the keynote speaker. I can honestly say, that I'm sure I learned more from those in attendance than they could have ever learned from me. I was really touched because in my 30 years of life, I have never been around so many people who are just like me. It was so great to see so many little ones, teens and even adults, sharing their stories and passing information and advice on life with AMC. It was also really cool to meet the women who make this annual event possible: Ani Samargian (founder), Theresa Lucas, Jennifer Keeton, Marybeth Eberhard, just to name a few.

Celebrating 5 at WDW was definitely an added bonus. We were all able to experience the magic of Disney with our family and eachother. I had a blast with the Heckert Family at Hollywood Studios. Having dinner with Mikaela & Melanie will always be one of many favorite memories.

Meet Athalia

Athalia is from South Africa. She lives with her two sister and mother. She received a wheelchair from FWM three years ago when she was 19. Before this, she'd not left her home let alone seen another person with a disability. Now, at 22, Athalia goes to school. She is in the second grade and has learned to write. She has never seen a doctor or been treated/diagnosed for her disability.

She was honored at FWM's Magic of Mobility Event this past week. This is her first time in the US.

While I am NOT a doctor, by the looks of her hands, arms & legs, I am reminded of Arthrogryposis - the same disability I have. I believe that our paths have crossed for a reason. This past Friday, I had the honor of meeting Athalia. She is beautiful, full of life and eager to try anything once, including surfing!

I have lived with my disability all of my life. I have met many others who are also disabled. Never has anyone touched my heart like Athalia.

Here are a few pictures from our brief meeting. Athalia has touched my life in a way that I cannot put into words.

SVILC Disability Pride Parade & Festival: Celebrating the ADA

Today the Silicon Valley Independent Living Center celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the signing of the ADA in San Jose. For the first time on the West Coast, the street was full of 300 plus people with disabilities marching down the street for a little over a mile cheering in celebration of their rights. There were even News Reporters from the Ukraine!

The celebration was a reminder of how far the disabled community has come and how much further we will continue to go.

Thank you SVILC for having me. You really know how to celebrate! You should be very proud of a successful event.

4th of July is actually one of my favorite holidays! There's good food, family & friends and we get to celebrate our awesome country. Today - I started off my holiday by singing the National Anthem at the Long Beach Kids' Bike Parade.

There were 600 little ones and their families that came to the beach with their patriotically decorated bikes to celebrate America.

Some of the crowd included the Long Beach Fire Department, The Boy Scouts, Miss Southern California - Mary Maldonado, Miss Teen Southern California - Jazmine Lucero, Miss Long Beach - Elisa Sabes and Mrs. Long Beach - Christy Van Der Westhuizen. The holiday was complete with a watermelon spit seed contest and a Patriotic Speech Competition.

There were a few familiar faces amongst the group of bikers. My friends from Precious Lamb Pre - School all received new bikes & helmets! All of the kids were also gifted with free cheeseburgers from "In - n Out"
The Long Beach Kids' Bike Parade is organized by Justin Rudd - an all around "Long Beach Guy". He's done it all & continues to build the LB community through CAT - Community Action Team. You can find more info on Justin at www.justinrudd.com.

"Disney performer wins Ms. Wheelchair Contest" by Sarah Tully

As a Disney performer, Jennifer Kumiyama has shown what she can do to thousands of theme-park visitors here in Anaheim. Now, Kumiyama is spreading her message statewide as Ms. Wheelchair California — and she may even go national.

Kumiyama, 30, a singer at Disney California Adventure, is set to compete in August in the pageant for Ms. Wheelchair America — an advocacy organization for women with disabilities.

Ms. Wheelchair is unlike a typical pageant: There are no beauty, swimsuit or talent contests. Instead, judges review applications, two-minute speeches and interviews. Winners are selected on their accomplishments and ability to act as spokeswomen for the disabled community.

Kumiyama, runner up last year, was one of nine state competitors in April, when she awed judges with her speech that concludes with a stanza of “When You Wish Upon a Star,” said Ruthee Goldkorn, executive director of Ms. Wheelchair California Pageant.

“We stopped dead in our tracks. We were like, ‘Wow,’” Goldkorn said.

Kumiyama has worked with Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and other organizations. She has put on her own cabaret shows and sang the national anthem at Angel Stadium.

Born with arthrogryposis, a congenital disorder, Kumiyama has limited movement in her limbs.

At birth, doctors suggested that her limbs be amputated, but her father refused. Instead, she underwent surgery as a child to improve her mobility. She needs help to get dressed and to eat; she lives on her own with roommates and cousins. She surfs and skis.

The oldest of six children, Kumiyama discovered a love for singing in kindergarten and began in a church choir.

“Singing is totally my oxygen,” Kumiyama said. “I get bummed out if I get a sore throat or I lose my voice.”

In 2001, she tried out for a reality show, “Pop Stars 2,” making the first cut before a dance competition weeded her out.

She hopes to someday become a casting director, possibly with Disney.

About seven years ago, Kumiyama got hired as a performer in “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” at Disney California Adventure and is believed to be the first and only Disney performer in a wheelchair.

In the show, Kumiyama sings in group scenes, including at a bazaar, using a costumed wheelchair on stage.

“She’s truly an inspiration,” said Kathy Cunningham, company coordinator for the “Aladdin” cast.

Kumiyama didn’t always receive a warm welcome from park visitors. In some Internet chat rooms, some wrote that Disney only hired her to make the company look better. They said she was a distraction.

“I used to get really bitter and felt like I had to prove myself every day,” Kumiyama said. “In the end, I’m going to win, because I deserve to be there (as much as) anyone else in the cast.”

Kumiyama found out that she inspired children and adult in wheelchairs — and that spurred her on.

“My biggest goal is to provide an example to children and young adults so they don’t have to go through the confusion that I went through at their age. Do I choose something to do that’s ‘realistic’ in my situation or … follow my goals and do what I truly want in my heart?” Kumiyama said. “Life is too short to do something you’re not passionate about.”

Today, June 30th, is Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita(AMC)Awareness Day. Today marks the launching of the www.amcsupport.org support group online, founded by Ani Samargian - a mother of a child with AMC. Ani & AMC Support's mission is to provide and encourage more understanding and mutual support among anyone affected with the diagnosis of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. They create a standard of AMC Awareness by means of conventions, meetings and studies.

I, like many others in the world, represent the 1 in 3,000 births in which AMC is said to occur. Arthrogryposis, or arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), comprises nonprogressive conditions characterized by multiple joint contractures found throughout the body at birth.There are many different types of Arthrogryposis.

In celebration of today being AMC Awareness Day, my friends/co-workers & I all wore blue. I'm super excited to go to my first AMCSI Convention August 3rd in Florida!

The La Jolla Arts Festival

After I hit the waves I passed by the La Jolla Arts Festival. It was my first time there & i had a great time. There were so many cool things to see - sculptures made of metal or plastic, paintings, wood carvings & my personal favorite; the sidewalk chalk artists! There was music of all different kinds. It was a great way to celebrate art, in it's many forms and the beauty of it all. Thank you Ronn Rohe for allowing me to experience this great celebration.

Singin' to Get to Michigan!

Tonight I had the opportunity to perform at the M Bar to raise funds to send me to Nationals. This year the 2011 Ms. Wheelchair America will be crowned in Grand Rapids, Michigan August 9^th to the 15^th.

I was accompanied by a great band of musicians – Jarod Sheahan on piano, Kent Soliven on Drums, and Paul Mondares on Bass with Erik Carcedo on Guitar. I had the greatest time singin’ with my friends Samara Otero & Brandon Pohl as well as hittin’ a few high notes with my Musical Directors Cherrie Cruz & Robert Orosco.

We were able to raise enough funds to help reach our goal. Thank you to my awesome cast, the M Bar & those who participated in the silent auction as well as the 50/50 drawing.

Ms. Wheelchair California 2010 - Recipient of the Jerry Stein Independent Living Award by the DRC

I am so thrilled to announce that the Disabled Resource Center has honored me this year with the “Jerry Stein Independent Living Award” at the 34th Annual DRC Awards Dinner Banquet. This year’s event was held at the Reef Restaurant. The DRC has worked really hard to provide resources for the disabled community so that they can achieve independence through employment, transportation, and living situations.
My independence is the most cherished thing I’ve ever wept for, sweat for & bled for. At a young age, my mother taught me how to do the simplest of things – bathe myself, comb my hair, brush my teeth, do laundry, etc, so that I can be the person I am today. I’ve been through a numerous amount of corrective surgery which helped me to use my mobility to its maximum capacity. My independence means so much to me.
The DRC also awarded Tina Foafoa with the “Volunteer of the Year Award”, Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, and former Olympic Champion & Special Olympic Supporter - Rafer Johnson.
I’d like to thank my dear friend Commissioner on Disability of Los Angeles - Theresa De Vera for nominating me for the award & supporting me in everything I do. Thank you DRC for providing hope & encouragement to those who might not have any. The DRC is a prime example of merging the disabled community into society.
Finally, I’d like to recognize my mother & my family for pushing me past my limitations to achieve the life I have today.

United Way OC Stops Hunger

This year was biggest ever United Way of Orange County Walk. Hundreds of people gathered at Angel’s Stadium to raise money for the thousands of starving men, women in children in Orange County alone. This year’s leader in number of volunteers at the walk was UPS.

I was honored to sing the National Anthem for the crowd of walkers 7 volunteers.

The energy was great & there were so many cool things to do before & after the walk. There was a kid’s obstacle course, booths to visit with useful information on stopping hunger and awesome bands that provided uplifting & positive music. Amongst the bands was blackhawk, made up of three gentlemen all just 11 years old. They were the coolest thing ever. Also there was Adam’s Attic – my personal favorite.

Capitol Action Day

Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, 54th District & Jennifer

Capitol Action Day is an annual rally at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people with disabilities, rally in front of the state capitol to bring awareness of the needs of the disabled community.
This was my first year at the event. I found it to be very educating as well as eye opening. I spent the day speaking to politicians about the importance of certain bills that will be or have been ignored or put into effect. I had the chance to express my concerns with budget cuts and thank certain assembly men/women for their support to the disabled community.
I met my assemblywoman, Bonnie Lowenthal (54th District) as she presented me with a certificate of recognition in my recent crowning as Ms. Wheelchair California 2010.
I also got the chance to catch up with my friend, MWCC 2007 - Susan Rotchy.
I encourage people to attend the rally next year. Let your voice be heard!

You may have seen Dante Basco as the awesome "Rufio" in "Disney's HOOK" - which I personally am a huge fan of & have been since it was released in 1991. Dante is also a very talented spoken word artist.
Today, Dante and the rest of the Basco Family hosted a celebration for Asian Pacific American Month called "Where You From" at the Museum of Tolerance. I had the awesome opportunity to hang out & sing for the family AND actress Amy Hill ("50 First Dates", "Next Friday", "Lilo & Stitch"). The celebration was mainly organized by Arianna Basco, also a spoken word artist. It celebrated people of Asian Pacific decent, like myself and my friends/fellow performers Kristina - Marie Lampino & Terrianne Butac. It was a great day of recognizing our heritage as well as our successes as a community & people.
Thank you to the Basco Clan, Amy Hill & daughter Penelope and especially the Museum of Tolerance.

Relay for Life - Luminaria Ceremony

Relay for Life is a 24 hour walk to raise funds for finding a cure for Cancer. I was invited to sing at the Luminaria Ceremony by my good friend Theresa DeVera at Eagle Rock High School. It was a celebration of the people who have survived and a remembrance of those who's lives were taken by Cancer. I was honored to be apart of such a great cause & to honor so many amazing people. Today I was invited to speak at Anaheim High School Arts Conservatory by my fried & dance teacher, Oscar Gonzalez. AHS just recently earned their Conservatory title earlier this year. The students have a huge focus on the Arts - everything from Music & Dance to Photography & Drama. The students at AHAC each come from very different walks of life. I was able to share with them, my life as a actress/singer with a disability as well as growing up with drug abuse and gang violence. The students were very receptive and wanted to know everything about me from what Arthrogryposis is to how auditions are in the real world. I was happy to share my life with them as well as educate them on how I live life as a woman with a disability. Part of the joy I receive as an advocate for the disabled community is educating those who are not disabled - so that they may have a better understanding. The students at Anaheim High Arts Conservatory were so welcoming. Thank you for listening, as well as expanding your minds.

Every year at different restaurants in Southern California the CHP host an event called TIP A CHiP to raise funds for the Southern California Special Olympics. This year I was fortunate enough to join the CHP from Torrance as a host for their annual event. The Yard House in Long Beach was kind enough to allow members of the CHP to trade in their badges for aprons & be servers, and to allow me to trade in my tiara to be a hostess for a night. All tips give by restaurant guests we accepted as donations. It was a successful night! I'd like to thank my family & friends - Aunt Karen, my cousins Matthew, Bryan Sr & Jr. Kumiyama, Teresa Castillo & Family, Janis Gohman, David Endow & Heather Link, Guada Monzon & Family, Shari & Chuck White, Jason Dino and Keith & Kathy Cunningham for all coming out to support me and CHP support the Special Olympics.

Recently, the Diversity Resource Group, CastABLE, had something special to celebrate, as their fellow cast member, Jennifer Kumiyama, was crowned the 2010 Ms. Wheelchair California at the Abilities Expo in Los Angeles.

From the moment she was born with Arthrogryposis (AMC), a congenital disorder that occurs once in every 3,000 births, the singer, writer and stage performer was destined to make a difference in this world.

A member of CastABLE and performer with the cast of "Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular," she has inspired many who share the same struggles with AMC. Through speaking presentations and participation at the Abilities Expo, she has joined other Disney Cast Members to promote education and awareness for all people with disabilities.

"I am honored to be the official spokesperson for the disabled community for my state," she said. "It has always been important to me to provide others with encouragement to empower themselves to break barriers and achieve goals. As part of the 'Aladdin' cast, I've had the opportunity to be an example to people from all over the world to show just how able people like me can be."

And now, with her new title, she will have even more opportunities to inspire others. In addition to speaking engagements, other responsibilities include working closely with local and state public policy makers, elected officials and law makers to improve the quality of life for all people with disabilities.

The 2010 Ms. Wheelchair California wears more than a crown. With humility, good humor and always wearing a smile, Jennifer will don a wetsuit, ski outfit or a stage costume any day of the week. She also wears the hat of chief editor of Disabled Guides for online travel blog, "Not Another Guide."

Whether she is surfing, skiing or singing at the Special Olympics, her life's mission is clear, and she attributes much of that to working at Disneyland.

"The Disneyland Resort is so aware of the need to provide differently-abled employees with a vast amount of accommodations as well as inclusion group CastABLE to ensure that awareness and support is provided," she said. "I'm proud to be a cast member for a company that celebrates diversity by educating, embracing and empowering people with disabilities."

Fellow cast member embraces her abilities

Fellow Cast Member and pageant participant, Larree Carnes, also shares Jennifer's passion. She went surfing for the first time recently and plans on going again with Life Rolls On, a division of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for young people affected by spinal cord injury and utilizes action sports as a platform to inspire infinite possibilities despite paralysis.

"Being in the pageant was important to me," she said. " I want to help change the perception in the community at large and expand my network to increase my advocacy involvement in the awesome community of people with disabilities."

It is no secret that the Special Olympics has a huge place in my heart.

Thanks to Nancy Becker, I had the extreme privilege to perform at the Special Olympics' "Bid of Excitement" at the Hyatt in Long Beach. It was such a treat to work with MC Vera Jimenez, KTLA 5 Weather & Traffic Reporter. Vera has earned two Emmys, three Golden Mikes and three Golden Pylons.

The evening was full of many highlights from the silent auction, live auction, as well as speeches by athletes. My friend Debi Anderson gave an amazing speech on her life as an athlete and adult with an intellectual disability. Ms. Anderson's favorite sport is gymnastics. She is not only a remarkable woman but a very achieved athlete. As a Global Messenger for the Special Olympics, Debi travels around the country as a testament to her motto "Nothing is impossible".

Tonight the SCSO's celebrate their Chairman, Board of Directors - Patrick McClenahan for his remarkable service and dedication to the Special Olympics. He has served on the Board as Chairman since 2001. He also serves in leadership roles on the board of Los Angeles Sports Council and the Ukelja Center for Ethical Leadership at California State University, Long Beach where in 2008 he was the William Dickson Leader in Residence. His list of achievements is beyond lenghthy.

Thank you Mr. McClenahan for you devotion to the Special Olympics. It is because of the generosity of yourself and other like you that the Special Olympics is a continuing success in changing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.

Carson High School CSM: CONNEXIONS & Ms. Wheelchair California 2010 Against Subtance use and Abuse

Tonight I was asked by Carson High's Student Movement group to speak at their Connexions event. Connexions is an annual celebration of being Drug/Alcohol free. CSM director & Carson High teacher Richard Bis, plays a big part in the students' lives, encouraging them to be responsible & make responsible decisions, how to NOT be a victim to drug/alcohol abuse and that nothing is worth the risk of their future.
Drug & Alcohol abuse has had it's run in the lives of many close friends, loved ones and even in my own family. I shared with CSM students how I chose not to be a victim, escape these kinds of situations and become a doer, not just a dreamer.
Thank you Richard Bis, Carson High CSM and my Sister Heather Kumiyama for helping to reach out to our youth to stop alcoholism & drug abuse.

Grace, warmth, and dignity is not only the closing sentence of the Ms. Wheelchair California promise but it also happens to be the words that best describe this year’s winner, Jennifer Kumiyama, who was crowned during the LA Abilities Expo in April.

The 30-year-old Long Beach resident first heard of the pageant more than ten years ago and decided to enter the event last year. “I was nominated as first runner-up during the 2009 pageant,” says Kumiyama. “This experience has been a whirlwind of emotions.”

Kumiyama, who has arthrogryposis, also known as arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, competed against eight other women for the honor of her crown. The women are judged based on their one-on-one interviews, onstage interviews, and onstage platform speech. “There was a sense of guilt when they chose me,” says Kumiyama. “What makes me stand out above these other beautiful women?”

Spending just a few moments with the new Ms. Wheelchair California answers that question through her modest display of appreciation, contagious personality, and heart-warming smile. She is sure to have a successful year.

Her duties will be numerous during her yearlong reign. She will have the opportunity to travel, make public appearances, and conduct radio, print, and television interviews. These include promoting awareness of the need to eliminate architectural and attitudinal barriers, educating Californians on disability issues, and informing the public of the achievements of people with disabilities across the state.

Ms. Wheelchair California pageants are designed to select the most accomplished and articulate spokeswoman for the millions of Americans with disabilities. The selected representative must be able to communicate the needs and accomplishments of her constituency to the general public, the business community and the legislature. “The program is not a beauty pageant,” says Ruthee Goldkorn, executive director and 2001 Ms. Wheelchair California. “We recognize women with disabilities as women of accomplishment and achievement.”

The newly crowned Ms. Wheelchair California is no stranger to the spotlight and can be seen performing with the cast of Aladdin at Disneyland, Calif. “Performing is my passion,” says Kumiyama. “I enjoy helping people forget about life for awhile.” She has been performing with the ensemble since 2002, and has more than 7000 performances under her belt doing four shows per-day before 8000 people. “This year is Aladdin’s final run,” says Kumiyama. “It will be sad to leave my family of performers after such a long run.”

Despite her busy schedule, she spends a great deal of time exploring other passions and stays active with cardio-kick boxing, snow skiing, and surfing. “Life is not worth living if you’re not happy,” says Kumiyama. “Ignore the negative, know who you are, and focus on the positive.”

Kumiyama lives her life in true Ms. Wheelchair California fashion and is a constant reminder that life’s journey is a reward and all things are possible. “Being disabled is not an end to your life. It’s the beginning of a new life full of all the same possibilities.”

Life Rolls On: They Will Surf Again

Over the past year I have built many new friendships through an organization called Life Rolls On. LRO has made a huge impact in the SCI community. The Organization recently joined forces with the Dana & Christopher Reeve Foundation. LRO hosts many TWSA events all over the US. Today I had the opportunity to surf in the first TWSA event in California this year in Huntington Beach. Surfing has made such a huge impact in my life, showing me that anything is possible. It has given me, as well as many others, hope to empower myself & keep pushing past barriers. Thank you to the entire staff and volunteers of the Life Rolls On Organization for making events like these possible - you truly change lives!

Kiwanis International Entertainment Industry Group helps find MWCC's Minarik Guitar a proud owner

Thank you so much to Minarik Guitars and the Kiwanis Industry group for allowing me to join one of their meetings to finally give away our Minarik Guitar sign by KLOS' Mark & Brian.

Since the pageant at the LA Convention Center, MWCC has been selling tickets to find this beauty an owner. Tonight I was able to sell a few more to Kiwanians as well as the staff at the Aura Bar. Aura Bar is kind enough to let Kiwanis use their space free of charge.

Minarik is used by many awesome musicians including Dave Navarro and KISS' legendary Gene Simmons.

I'm a firm believer that doing good will bring good back to you. Tonight, Jared - the Manager at the Aura Bar won the Minarik. Jared actually plays guitar & told me that earlier today he was shopping online for a new one.

I got to spend time with my cousin Chrissy - it's been twenty years since we've seen each other.
A pond at Waimea Valley. Beautiful, accessible Hike

On April 15th, I, along with some of my dear friends took flight to Honolulu, Hawaii for 6 days! At first I was a little hesitant. I was concerned about accessibility. Oahu didn't let me down though. I did so much & had so much fun that I didn't want to come home!
We took a hike at Makapuu that overlooked the most amazing beaches I've ever seen. The hike was completely accessible with views to die for. Waimea Falls was another hike we did. There was so much Hawaiian culture there. You can actually swim in the fall if you'd like. The Dole Plantation was a real treat with a really cool (and confusing!) maze that was loads of fun! Thw Dole Whip was the best part though!
Hawaii was loads of fun & so welcoming to Ms. Wheelchair California! Mahalo, Hawaii - until we meet again!

MINARIK GUITARS, KLOS 95.5's Mark & Brian Support MWCC

This morning I had the awesome opportunity to visit KLOS - FM Radio Station; home of Mark & Brian Mornings. Legendary rock radio DJs Mark & Brian were gracious enough to sign the Minarik Guitar the the Ms. Wheelchair California Pageant, Inc. is holding an "Opportunity Drawing" for. I got my chair "marked" to properly be strapped when I ride a bus or paratransit, by MTA.

Today, it all set in - the reality of being MWCC! I had a great day ahead of me at the Ability Expo and the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of adaptive equipment for sports, leisure & ever day living.
I've been attending the expo since I was 13. It is essential to everyone in the disability community and their loved ones. The expo provides people with disabilities useful resources to live a life of independence.
With exhibits for vehicles, sport, travel and many other things, the exhibit is the highlight of my year. There was adaptive rock climbing, extreme sports and the Colours Girls' Dance Group.

Jennifer Kumiyama is Ms. Wheelchair California 2010!

Jennifer Kumiyama was crowned Ms. Wheelchair California 2010 today at The Abilities Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Jennifer has dreamed of earning this title since she was 10 years old. " I met a Ms. Wheelchair title holder when I was 10 & she was the epitome of all that was possible for me. She empowered me to turn my dreams into reality. Now I want to encourage others to do the same."

Jennifer was born with Arthrogryposis and uses a wheelchair everyday. She is a singer in the "Aladdin" show at Disney's California Adventure Theme Park where she performs for 8,000 people daily. Being a singer has always been her dream, but not everyone was encouraging of it. "I am proof that dreams can be turned into reality" says Kumiyama.

As Ms. Wheelchair California, Jennifer will continue encouraging children & young adults with disabilities so that they may empower themselves to turn their own dreams into reality.
Jennifer will compete for the Ms. Wheelchair America title in August 2010 in Michigan.
